چکیده

Using an atomic force microscope to nanopattern a substrate for liquid crystal alignment, a bend distortion is imposed on a liquid crystal. In regions of large bend the smectic-A phase melts into the nematic phase, and the width of the melted region is measured as a function of temperature. The results are consistent with type-I superconducting (nematic — smectic-A) behavior, wherein a large magnetic field (bend or twist distortion) induces an order to disorder transition. A model that accounts for non mean-field behavior is presented. aPresent address: Japan Science and Technology Agency, Tsukuba, Japan bPresent address: Dipartamento di Fisica, Università della Calabria,

Local distortion energy and coarse-grained elasticity of the twist-bend nematic phase.

The recently discovered twist-bend nematic phase of achiral bent-shaped molecules, NTB, has a doubly degenerate ground-state with a periodically modulated heliconical structure and unusual distortion elasticity, the theoretical description of which is still debated. We show that the NTB phase has the same macroscopic symmetry as another periodic mesophase, the chiral smectic-A, SmA*. Based on t...

Effect of elastic degrees of freedom at columnar-crystalline phase transition

2014 A Ginzburg-Landau Hamiltonian describing systems of disc-like molecules in the columnar phase is used to investigate the properties of the columnar-crystalline transition. Near the transition temperature in the columnar phase, the enhancement of the bend elastic constant is found by a perturbation calculation. The gauge coupling mechanism which leads to a first order transition in the case...

Ultrasonic Absorption and Order of the Smectic-a-nematic Phase Transition

— Ultrasonic measurements in CBOOA near the smectic A-nematic transition show the occurrence of critical absorption and therefore support the second order nature of the transition. The order and the dynamical behaviour of smectic and on the dynamics of the processes. In the present A-nematic transition (SA-N) in liquid crystals is at communication we report some preliminary results the present ...

Theoretical study of fluid membranes of spherical topology with internal degrees of freedom.

A theoretical study of vesicles of topological genus zero is presented. The bilayer membranes forming the vesicles have various degrees of intrinsic (tangent-plane) orientational order, ranging from smectic to hexatic, frustrated by curvature and topology. The field-theoretical model for these 'n-atic' surfaces has been studied before in the low temperature (mean-field) limit. Work presented he...

Vortex liquid crystals in anisotropic type II superconductors.

In an isotropic type II superconductor in a moderate magnetic field, the transition to the normal state occurs by vortex lattice melting. In certain anisotropic cases, the vortices acquire elongated cross sections and interactions. Systems of anisotropic, interacting constituents generally exhibit liquid crystalline phases. We examine the possibility of a two step melting in homogeneous type II...
